Improving and Expanding Design Expressions for a Local Institution
The Winnipeg Comedy Festival has been bringing culture and humour to the city of Winnipeg for 25 years,
and their branding has become iconic in the city as a cultural cornerstone and a career staple for upcoming
talent internationally.
The challenge was to create a new set of expressions for the 2025 festival dates, including a poster, two
ads, and a web based advertising campaign.
Beginning with the poster, we developed the phrase "Winnnipeg is One Funny Place", which is a call back to
the classic Winnipeg song by The Weakerthans, "One Great City". The iconic brand logo of the banana peal is
placed comedically among Winnipeg landmarks such as the Esplanade Riel Bridge, and in earlier iterations, in
front of the Golden Boy.
From there, we created a series of assets to develop the idea further, for billboards, print and mobile,
as well as a website updated with the new branding style.
